ActionAid to assist gov’t in tax collection

ActionAid Ghana has announced measures to help government prevent multinationals from absconding tax due Ghana.

The announcement follows a study ActionAid Ghana conducted in 2010 which revealed that government of Ghana is losing a lot of resources in the tax administration.

ActionAid Ghana says issues of multinationals refusing to pay tax is a human right issue because governments always complains of inadequate resources to address developmental problems facing the people.

The Deputy Country Director and Head of Programs and Policy at ActionAid Ghana, Mr Yakubu Mohammed Saani who disclosed to Zaa News in an interview  said, after the study on multinationals nonpayment of tax, ActionAid launched a campaign called “Tax Justice Campaign’’ to ensure that multinational companies do not dodge paying their taxes in Ghana.

He explained the Tax Justice Campaign is one of the ActionAid international multi-country campaigns and his outfit will focus on transfer price as practiced by multinational corporations. ’’We have situations where government complains of lack of resources and because of lack resources government is not able to provide resources to respond to the needs of the people; he lamented’’.

ActionAid Mr Saani said it is now creating awareness and also engaging Economic and Organized Crime (EOCO) Office, Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and the ministry of finance to relook at some of the treaties Ghana have with multinational corporations.
