G.E.S closed down 3 SHS; 29 charged for causing unlawful damage to school properties

The Ghana Education Service have closed down three Senior High  Schools (SHS)  in the Norther Region over riots which led to the destruction of several properties. The schoos include Karaga senior high schoo in the Karaga district, T.I Ahmadiyya senior high in Salga and the Nalerigu senior in the Est Mamprusi district of the northern region. 

On Saturday August 1st 2015, the Nalerigu Senior High School (NASS) was closed down indefinitely by the Ghana Education Service after students went on rampage destroying valuable properties of the school.   

The students in that evening rioted, destroying the head master’s bungalow, school vehicles, ICT center and girls’ dormitory.

The students’ action follows school authorities not allowing them to organize entertainment to mark the end of the term, popularly called “closing jams”. So far 31 students have been arrested in connection with the riot.

Northern Regional Police Public Rations Officer (PRO), ASP Ebenezer Tetteh who confirmed the arrest told Zaa News that two out of 31 students arrested were charged for theft while others were charged for unlawfully causing damage to school properties.

According to ASP Tetteh ten desk top computers were stolen by the students after they had broken into the school’s computer laboratory.

The angry students mainly boys destroyed their female counterpart’s dormitory for the girl’s refusal to join them in engaging in unlawful act.

The wind screen of the Science Resource bus of the school, Mahidra Pick-up and three other vehicles were smashed during the riots.

The closure of Nalerigu SHS brings to third, the number of senior high schools being closed down by GES within this month.  Students of Karaga and T.I Ahmadiyya are still at their various homes after embarking on vandalizing school properties with pertinent issues which could have been resolved between them and the school authorities.
