Gender Minister convoy involved in accident; 6 officers in critical condition

Six officials from the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection have sustained serious injuries and are in a critical condition after two vehicles in which they were traveling with crashed. It occurred at about 12:00 local time on Thursday hundred meters away from Yendi township in Yendi-Zabzugu road.

The officials were part of the sector minister, Nana Oye Lithur team on a day's working visit to two communities in Sang district and Ngani witches camp in the Yendi Municipality of the northern region.

 The officers involved and in critical condition include the driver of a Toyota hilux pickup with registration number GV63-14, Samuel Owusu Achempong , the driver of a Tata 4×4 vehicle  with a registration number GEC4426-09  Evans A. Ofori.  

The Tata was donated to the Tamale children’s home by artel Ghana.

The Toyota Hilux in the process hit and uprooted a shea nut tree.

The four occupants of the two vehicles Iddrisu Sumaila and Garba Gloria and two others whose identity was not readily given by police due to their conditions are currently receiving treatment at Yendi government hospital.

The Yendi divisional police command in confirming the accident to journalists described the it as very serious one. 

The accident occurred minutes after the minister; Nana Oye Lithur visited Nadundo, a farming community in the Sang district to register extremely poor people into the government pro-poor social intervention, the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP 1000) program. 

After registration and verification exercise of 27 beneficiaries in Nadundo community, the team left Nadundo for Ngani to registered inmates of Ngani alleged witch camp. 

The two vehicles which was behind the team according to eye witness crashed after the Tata 4×4 vehicles tried to overtake the Toyota Hilux without the notice of the escort police. 

Eye witness says, the Tata was trying to overtake the Toyota hilux and in the process the two veered off the road somersaulted and damage beyond repairs. 

 In a related development, eight (8) press men who were covering the LEAP 1000 program escaped unhurt after their   Nissan Van also involved in an accident at Saabu in the Sang district. 

The press accident occurred at about 4:30pm on their way back to Tamale when about  five-years-old boy  trying to cross the road without recourse to the moving vehicles. 

The boy run into the vehicle after several attempts by the driver to dodged the boy failed. 

Nana Oye Lithur expressed shocked at the second accident after visiting her officials who were in critical condition at Yendi hospital. 

Hospital authorities say the boy is responding to treatment.
