Two lecturers of the University for Development Studies (UDS) Medical School have urged Managers of education in the Northern Region to use part of their district education endowment fund to support extra educational promotion activities in the region.

The lecturers, Dr. Yidana Adadow and Mr Mustapha Issahaku were speaking after a “WHAT DO YOU KNOW?” quiz competition organized by a non-profit non-governmental organization, REAL SMART. The duo did not only lament the falling standards of education but also express grave concern for the promotion of entertainment, sports and other talents in schools.

They also urged education- oriented organizations to partner the Real Smart organization to ensure that the quiz competition becomes a terminal program. They asked managers of the participating schools to see the results of the competition as an ultimate win for education and not for one particular school.

Exclusively speaking to the media, Director of Real Smart, organizers of the quiz competition, Issahaku Riida called for support for such competitions to help revive the quality and the poor performance of schools especially during the Basic Education Certificate Examination (B.E.C.E). Mr Riida mentioned lack of funding, resources and commitment on the part of some education managers and heads of schools as some of the challenges faced when putting up the program.

Six schools contested in the first phase of the competition where three schools, namely, Tamale International Junior High School, Northern Star Junior High school and Greater Heights School complex qualified for the final stage. The competition which covered the core subject areas: Integrated Science, Mathematics, English Language and general knowledge saw Greater Heights emerge winners of the competition with 165 point, followed by Tamale International with 141 points and Northern Star School complex with 102 points.
