LGRD commends people of north for massive turnout on NSD

The Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) Ministry has commended the people of Northern Region for the massive turnout for the region’s turn of the National Sanitation Day (NSD) exercise in Tamale.

 The ministry says the zeal and passion the people of the north showed is an indication that the country can get the filth out of the major cities and towns for healthy life.

The ministry is particularly happy about the attendance of chiefs, security services, all political parties, interest groups and identifiable institutions including the banking sector.

The northern region’s turn which is the fourth of series of NSD started about 6am Saturday in all communities in Tamale and the district capitals.

 The ministry relocated it to Tamale last Monday to encourage the people in the region to participate in the clean-up exercise and encouraged the citizens to show interest in upcoming district level elections.

Members of parliament in the northern region led by the caucus leader Amadu Seidu all partook in the exercise. Hundreds of people came out to sweep and remove waste from the choked up gutters in their various localities. Most institutions in the metropolis cleaned up their premises before joining the team to clean the city.

Shop owners in the region adhered to the advice of the committee tasked to ensure that shops in the central business district were closed till 12 noon.  

Speaking to Zaa News, Local Government Minister, Julius Debra described the NSD in the north as the biggest so far. He commended traditional rulers and political parties for participating actively in the exercise and that the exercise is not about politics but about the health of the people.

Over hundred workers of the Volta River Authority led by the Public Relations Manager in the Northern, Alhaji Mohammed Siam first cleaned up their premises before joining the residents.
