The Ghana Hernia Society is advising hernia patients to report early to hospitals for treatment to avoid complications. The society says the problem of hernia is minimal if patients report early to hospitals like any other diseases.
Consultant General Surgeon and Endoscopes at Tamale Teaching Hospital and a lecturer at the school of Medicine and health science, University for Development Studies, Dr Stephen Tebiri gave the advice at the inauguration of the society at the hospital.
Speaking to Zaa news, Dr Stephen Tebiri, says the aim of Ghana Hernia Society is to standardize the operation of hernia in the country, operate on all hernias especially in the hardworking farming communities.
According to Dr Tebiri, the complications of the disease can be minimized if precautionary measures are taken and brought to the hospital immediately.
The society was being formed by a group of surgeons from the Tamale, Korlebu and Cape Coast Teaching Hospitals who came together in Accra and formed the society with the aim of standardizing the operations of hernia.
Dr Tebiri said the hernia phenomenon was commonly affecting people who do physical activities mostly in the yam producing farming communities in the Yendi area of the northern region.
He stated that it is the desire of the society to treat the disease at the early stages. Ghana Hernia Society is also calling on politicians and business community and academia as well as citizens to join the crusade to eliminate the sickness that is killing hardworking people.
28 hernia patients mainly from Yendi area were operated on within the two day pre congress to mark the inauguration of the Hernia society held at the Tamale Teaching Hospital.
Hernia according to health experts is one of the dangerous diseases, yet with little attention. The disease is one of the major health problems in Ghana commonly found in the farming communities in the three Northern Regions.
The theme of the Ghana Hernia society is; “Ghana from hernia free .free forever’’.
