UDS honors late Sagnara Naa

The University for Development Studies (UDS) has honored posthumously by naming it’s over 350-capacity academic chamber after the late chief of Sagnarigu, Sagnara  Naa, Dr Andani Andan. The academic board of UDS took the decision after carefully considering his contribution to the establishment of the university. The late Dr Andani Andan, the university said, contributed immensely and deserved to be honored. The late Sagnara Naa who was the first Dagomba medical doctor and surgeon in the northern region, allocated free land to UDS for the establishment of its medical school in Tamale was remarkable.

Dr Andani Andan donated a piece of land to UDS for central administration and the School of Medicine as well as School of Allied Sciences located in Saganarigu Dungu.

The school until the generosity of Dr Andani Andan was carrying out its administrative duties at the Faculty of Education located in Choggu Mma-Naayili while it struggled with a permanent location for School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS).

At a ceremony to unveil the plaque at the auditorium at the forecourt of the university today, the Vice Chancellor of UDS, Professor Haruna Yakubu said Dr Andani Andan’s recognition marks the beginning of UDS’s attempt to recognize people who contributed to the success of the UDS.

The academic board which is the peak of academic body and principal policy making and advisory body chose to name the academic Board Chamber after the late Sagnaranaa as a way of showing their gratitude to him for donating the land on which the Tamale campus is situated. 

The Vice Chancellor told the gather that, Dr Andani Andan saw the need to support UDS as way of supporting the development of Ghana by inviting the university to take from his traditional area as much land was necessary at the time.

Professor said the late Dr Andani Andan has played his part in the growth and development of UDS and urge all and sundry to play their individual and collective parts by supporting the growth and development of the university.

The paramount Chief of Sagnarigu, Ambassador Naa Yakubu Abdulai on behalf of Sagnarigu traditional council and the family of late Dr Andani Andan thanked UDS for recognizing the contribution of his predecessor and the Sagnarigu traditional area.

The Sagnara Naa appealed to government and philanthropist to help UDS build more hostel facilities for the students.  Ambassador Yakubu Abdulai reminded the UDS the need to improve lighting system and security in its Tamale campus to protect the students.

Sagnarigu traditional council the chief said will knock on the doors of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), and the government to support and build adequate infrastructure of modern standards of the university.

Born about 89 years ago, Chief Andani Andan attended his elementary education at Gambaga and Zuarungo and ended his education abroad as a qualified medical doctor and surgeon.

He was the first Dagomba doctor and surgeon.He worked at the Tema government hospital, Obuasi GOLDDescription: http://cdncache1-a.akamaihd.net/items/it/img/arrow-10x10.png Mines hospital and the police hospital where he worked as Director of the hospital.

Dr. Andan also worked at the UST medical school now KNUST medical school and rose to become the head of the governing board of the university.

He later opened his private clinic at Bonsu in Kumasi where he continued to practice as a surgeon until his death on 4th July 2007.

His ascension to the Sagnarigu throne lasted forty one years and he was the only important chief in Dagbon apart from the korili chief not to have been enskined by the slain YAA Na Yakubu II.

He was survived by many wives and children and is credited with contributing to the development of medicine in Ghana.
