Support tree planting to combat desertification-Ayariga direct MMDAs

Government has directed Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies in the Northern region to set aside reasonable amount of their budgets to plant trees in their respective areas.

Government has urged district chief executives not to leave tree planting to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a sole agency responsible in protecting the environment.

Government says the desertification and drought in the three regions of the north need a holistic approach by all stakeholders and with the support of chiefs, the environment will be protected.

The Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI), Mahama Ayariga gave the directive when he addressed a durbar of chiefs and people in Kasulyili in the Tolon district to mark this year’s national celebration of World Desertification and Drought Day.

The environment minister blamed desertification and droughts on the behavior and conduct of Ghanaians and the increasing global population.

The Executive Director of EPA, Daniel Amlalo explained that the Tolon district was selected due to poor soil fertility and sustained reduction of agriculture productivity in the area.
