UDS Upper regions campuses to be autonomous by end of 2016-committee chair

The ten-member committee constituted by the government to look into petitions from individuals and organizations on the conversion of University for Development Studies campuses in the  Uppqer  East and Upper West Regions has given firm assurance that, government is work assiduously on the conversion process. 

The committee said the two Upper regions UDS campuses autonomous process will soon be completed before 2016.   

Chairperson of the committee, Dr. Christiana Amoaku Nuamah who gave the assurance at the Northern Regional Coordinating Council at a short meeting said, the government of President John Dramani Mahama is committed in fulfilling its promises on tertiary education. 

She appealed to members of parliament in the the three regions of the north to speed up the  legal process that will give it full legal backing.

 According to her, the NDC government has a track record in establishing universities citing UDS which was established by the former President Rawlings as example.

Dr Christina Amoaku Nuamah and her team are on a familiarization visits to the Northern, Upper East and Upper West regions to acquaint themselves with the campuses. 

She said the campuses already have well established structures and that the committee is engaging various stakeholders on the autonomy of the UDS campus in Wa in the Upper West region and Navorogu in the Upper East region. The campuses she added will need a few additional courses to be qualified as an autonomous university. 

The committee met with the Vice-Chancellor Professor Haruna Yakubu and the management of the University for Development Studies.

In 2009 when the NDC came to power, the late President John Evans Atta Mills proposed the establishment of two additional public universities solely on health and allied sciences in the area of support services to the medical fraternity and the forestry and natural resources management. 

The University Environment and Sustainable development situated at Somanya in the Eastern region, Dr. Christiana said is almost completed and that president will soon present official documents to the authorities of the university.
