Vo Naa calls for more education on desertification

The Chief of Vogu and Member of Council of State, Alhaji Mohamadu Baba Bawa has called for more education in the northern region to combating desertification and drought.

According to the chief, community members need to know more about dangers associated with indiscriminate felling of trees and land degradation especially in food production.

The chief made the call at a durbar of chiefs and people in the Kasuliyili traditional area in the Tolon district during the National celebration of this year’s World Day to combat Desertification and Drought.

The Vo Naa also calls for an end to all forms of activities that will silt water bodies in the northern region. The three regions of the north has been rotating desertification and drought as a result of negative environmental practices that culminate into food insecurity, floods and  hash weather conditions.

The celebration was on the theme; ’’Protect our farm lands for sustainable food production’’. Northern regional Minister Alhaji Mohammed-Muniru Limuna described the theme as significant as land degradation in dry areas and water resources depletion negatively affected most communities with its consequences such as poverty and deprivation.

The situation the minister observed calls for immediate sustainable and urgent intervention in order to secure livelihoods and protect soil and natural resources.
