Northern Regional Minister, Moses Mabengba has called for the commercialization of shea trees in the country to help boost its population.
He said bush burning and other activities that degrade the environment constitute a substantial threat to dismembering the shea population and one way of saving the situation was to encourage more people to plant the shea trees to save it from extinction.
The minister was speaking during a courtesy call on him by the National Shea Steering Committee.
The committee inaugurated by the vice president last year was mandated to work towards revitalizing shea into a more viable product.
The minister said even though government is appreciative of the work of the committee it would be better for the committee to work towards encouraging the plantation of shea trees. A lecture at the University for Development Studies and member of the committee, Dr. S. A.  Yidana who has written a paper on technologies available for revamping the shea industry spoke to ZAA news on the sidelines.
Francis Osei Bonsu who led the committee expressed the committee’s preparedness to boost the shea product and appealed to the Regional Coordinating Council for office accommodation.                                   ]]>
