Second lady put smiles on the faces of 200 widows

About 200 widows in the northern region have been supported by the Second Lady, Samira Bawumia. The widows were among victims of this year’s flood disaster that hit the region.

The women were drawn from five villages in the Sagnarigu municipality, the Kumbungu and Tolon districts as well as the Savelugu municipality and the Tamale metropolis.

The women received mini bags of rice, cooking oil, assorted drinks, soap and new cloths.

The second lady, who made the presentation to the women at Yong Duuni in the Sagnarigu municipality, said she was touched by the plight of the widows who are already struggling after their husbands died.

The women’s plight was brought to the attention of the second lady’s office by a broadcast journalist, Abdul Karim Nantogmah’s story, which catalogued the difficulties the widows were going through after the floods.

The second lady’s support to the widows formed part of the festive activities of the Samira Empowerment and Humanitarian project. She told parents that her office has set up what she called a ‘library in a box’ project, where schools with libraries are provided a box to encourage children to inculcate the habit of reading.

She entreated parents in the northern region to take advantage of the government’s free senior high school policy.

According to her, education is the leveler of everyone and all efforts must be geared towards educating the future leaders.

Over 100,000 women in the East Gonja Municipality have so far benefited from the Samira Empowerment and Humanitarian Health (SEHP) project, where birth kits were given freely to midwives to ensure infections free deliveries.

The second lady also announced plans to set up four shea butter processing centers in the northern region. The centers are to empower women engaged in shea butter processing activities economically in the region.

Mrs Bawumia commended the Executive Director of Northern Widows Agriculture Foundation (NWAF), a local NGO operating in the area Mr Issah Iddrisu for its efforts to assist the widows. NWAF has been mobilizing widows to empower them and increase the resilience of widows in Ghana, with specific reference to Agricultural-oriented business and participation in governance and leadership.
