Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) has suspended the ongoing district level election in the Nasia electoral area of the West Mamprusi district in the northern region indefinitely.

The decision follows the refusal of the electorates to cast their votes due to the mix-up of aspirant’s pictures in the ballot papers.

The first One of the aspiring candidates Salifu Alhassan Adam told Zaa News that the issue has gone beyond the district and regional directorate of EC and it has been referred to the national level.

The electorates according to Mr Salifu vehemently refused to vote after the picture of Salifu Alhassan Adam who is first in the ballot paper was replaced by Yamusah Azizi. ‘Are we voting names or pictures’ Mr Salifu asked? It is not clear when the EC will conduct the election in the Nasia electoral area.

In some electoral areas in the Salga North constituency voting started at about 9 00 am due to the late arrival of the verification officer at a polling station in the Wangase electoral area. Ewuntomah Sumaila Issah, an aspirant told Zaa News 56 eligible voters have casted their votes at 9:30 am local time.

General apathy

Zaa news reporters from across the region reported that the DLE turn out in most of the polling stations was very low.

Most of the electoral areas our reporters visited says instead of  7:00 am, the process started 8 and 9 am local time. Some aspirants accused EC of not attaching importance to the district elections and called on EC not to religate it to the background.

Northern Regional Director of National Commission for Civil Education Alhaji Abdul Razak Saani says he is disapinted at the low turnout and urged elligeble voters to come out and cast their votes.
