Illustrious son of Zabzugu and business tycoon laid to rest

Befitting final funeral rites for one of the illustrious son’s of the northern region, the late Alhaji Yakubu Issahaku Zongo were held in his home town of Zabzugu in the northern region.

The late Alhaji Yakubu, a business tycoon died on Thursday March 9, 2017 after a short illness at a private hospital in Kumasi at the age of 120 years and was buried on 12 March, 2017.

He was one of the strong pillars of Dagbon whose contributions to the development of Dagbon in the economy and humanity areas, according to friends and family members, cannot be overemphasized.

The late Alhaji Zongo was the brain behind the establishment of the Dagbon transportation lorry station in the nation’s famous lorry station, Alabar and Kejetia lorry stations in Kumasi. Alhaji Zongo who lived in Kumasi for over thirty years provided support to many northerners in the Ashanti regional capital.

Until his death, the late business tycoon was passionate about developmental issues in the north and wasn’t hesitant to extend a helping hand to anyone from the north who encountered difficulties in the sprawling city.

Many people who knew the late Alhaji Zongo described him as a patriotic son of Dagbon and that Dagbon has lost an important personality and prayed for his soul to rest in bosom of Allah. For many residents of Zabzugu, his contributions were remarkable and the vacuum by his death is huge.

Dignitaries who attended the late Alhaji Zongo’s third day Adua included the paramount chief of Sagnarigu traditional area, Ambassador Yakubu Abduali, the paramount chief of the Gulkpegu traditional area from Dagbon, Alhaji Alhassan Abdulai, former foreign affairs minister, Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni, the managing director of Stanbic Bank Ghana, Mr. Alhassan Andani, member of parliament for Zabzugu, Mr.  Alhassan Umar among others.

Alhaji Yakubu Zongo known by many in Dagbon as a power broker left behind 23 children and three wives.

Some of his children are living in Belgium, Canada and the United States of America. Owner of one the oldest Internet cafe in Tamale, Mr Abdul Razak Yakubu is among the Alhaji Yakubu Zongo’s children.
