The Northern Regional Secretariat of the Opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued a one week ultimatum to the ruling National Democratic Congress government to address the plight of last two weeks’ rainstorm victims in the Tamale Metropolis.
The party says the Mills-Mahama government’s insensitivity to the plight of the citizenry only understands constant agitations before it can address people’s concerns.
The NPP say after two weeks of a devastating rainstorm that led to the flooding situation in Tamale, the Tamale metropolitan assembly and the central government look unconcerned while victims continue to suffer.
Addressing a maiden news conference in Tamale, the South Parliamentary candidate of the NPP, Abdulai Piegu Shamsudeen claimed that, most victims of the disaster are still putting up with friends and families, especially Nalung, Bilpela, Kalariga Sawaba and Kukou in the Tamale south constituency.
Most of the affected areas, according to Mr. Shamsudeen, are still living in darkness as a result of broken down electrical poles, while farming activities which is the mainstay of the  rural people affected by the flood had their farms  washed off.
The NPP is also accusing the Northern regional Minister and the three members of parliament for failing to visit the victims in their respective constituency to ascertain the extent of damage to the affected communities.
The NPP also challenged the MPs and the regional minister for refusing to visit and sympathize with the people of Katarga, Dungu and Swagshie when their houses were demolished by the military under the pretext that the residents built on the military land.
The NPP further claimed the people have been homeless for more than six months now without any compensation and called on the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly to, as matter of urgency, address the concerns of the people.
The Northern Regional Communication Director of the party, Abudu Abdul-Ganiu said Ghana under Nana Addo leadership would resource the National Disaster Management Organizations to ensure that they respond swiftly victim’s disasters of any form.
Mr. Ganiu said government’s failure to take inventory on the flood victims is a clear demonstration of its lukewarm attitude towards the plight of the citizenry.
