Some chiefs in the Northern Region have pledged to encourage and support women who are ready to contest and participate in the 2014 local government elections.

According to them, their decision is not just only to select any woman but someone who is hard working, dedicated, and respectful and can do the work efficiently.

This came to light at a day’s stakeholders meeting on enhancing women participation in the 2014 local government elections and beyond organized by Northern Sector Action on Awareness Center (NORSSAC), a gender based non-governmental organisation in the Northern Region.

But before they do that, they will call the women in the communities and inform them about their decision to help them and examine those who can do the work properly and then select them to contest.

A Government Appointee for Nanumba North and President of the Northern Region Assembly Women’s Caucus on Good Governance, Hajia Abiba Chambas appealed to the government of Ghana to really go by its words and promises of saying that out of the 30 percent government appointees in the district assemblies, women should take one third of the 30 percent.

Northern Regional Director of National Commission for Civic Education, Alhaji Abdul-Razak Saani said his outfit would build the capacity of interested women who are ready to take up leadership positions.
