The Yendi Municipality Education Oversight Committee (MEOC) on Monday June, 13 sacked twelve candidates billed to take the 2016 Basic Education Certificate Examination in the municipality.
The decisions was reached by stakeholders in education and the authorities of Yendi municipal assembly.
According to MEOC, the candidates were expelled to prevent them from contributing to the abysmal performance in the BECE results.
The Yendi Municipality Chief Executive (MCE), Alhaji Issah Zakaria who disclosed this to Zaa News during the 1st Town Hall meeting explained that before the decision was taken, the municipal education directorate carried out an exercise on truancy among candidates.
The exercise on candidates who are not attending classes was headed by the municipal education director. The MCE found out that 12 candidates failed to attend classes for three academic terms.
This, Alhaji Zakaria noted, if allowed to continue will significantly contribute to abysmal BECE performance. He said the assembly has to take the decision because when the children fail, parents rain all manner of insults on politicians, assembly members and education authorities.
The MCE who disclosed this at the first town hall meeting said the assembly will not tolerate parents who allowed their children to roam aimlessly to the detriment the municipality.
The MCE who led officials from the assembly and education directorates to interact with the candidates on the first day also found out that, over three candidates were pregnant.
MEOC, the Yendi MCE said, will continue monitoring truancy in the basic schools every year to ensure that candidates attend classes as required by the Ghana Education Service.
The MCE also entreated teachers to be fair in marking students register because MEOC observed that some teachers are not marking class registers.
A concerned resident suggested to the assembly to form arresting committees or task force to get rid of truants in the night. The task force he noted will bring to stop young people from roaming at night and engaging in all manner of immoral things.
The municipal coordinating director blamed parents for reneging on their responsibilities and said the assembly will be compelled to apply laws to deal with parents.
