The Ghana Baptist Church in Yↄŋ in the Savelugu municipality has had its doors padlocked by the police following a conflict between the mother association, Ghana Baptist Convention and a breakaway association known as Ghana International Baptist Convention.
Speaking to Zaa news, the spokesperson for the pastor of Yↄŋ, Mr Peter Fuseini said their mother church, the Ghana Baptist Convention headquartered in Kumasi, asked the breakaway faction, which is seven years ago old and fully registered as Ghana International Baptist Convention, to rejoin the mother association.
But the breakaway faction rejected the call resulting in the closure of the place of worship upon the orders of the chief of Savelugu.
Mr Fuseini called for reconciliation, saying the community has one ancestry and a common destiny. A member of the aggrieved youth, Mr Abukari Seidu shared his views with Zaa News. He appealed to chiefs and opinion leaders to intervene to find an amicable solution to the impasse.
When Zaa news contacted the founding father of the Ghana Baptist Convention at Yↄŋ, who is at the center of the controversy, retired Reverend Stephen Abu Mahama, he said as the founder of the church in 1960, he advises the newly formed association to either go back to their roots or leave the current building for those in support of the idea of reconciliation.
He reiterated that there should not be any divisions whatsoever, and urged Pastor Abu and his congregation to consider reintegrating with the mother convention, or failing that they should construct their own church for fellowship.
