Plan your birth well –Gender minister tells young girls

The Gender, Children  and Social Protection Minister, Nana Oye Lithur has advice young girls in the country to avoid sex if they can in order not to abandon the innocent children at the various children homes. 

She said, she was alarmed about the number teenage pregnancy especially among junior high schools students in the northern region.

Nana Oye Lithur stressed the need for the young girls to avoid sex and plan their births in order to be become responsible women in future.  

She visited the Tamale central market, Northern Youth for Peace and Development training center at Nakpazoo and the Nyohini Children’s home.

At the Nyohini Chldren Home Nana Oye Lithur presented some assorted items worth thousands of Ghana cedis to Nyohini Children home in Tamale as part her one day working visit to the northern region. According to the minister, this is her visit since her appointment and that she was extremely delighted for the warm welcome she received.

She also visited the Tamale Central Market (TCM) and interacted with the market women.

The excited market women could not hide their joy for meeting what they said was their own and sung a peace song to welcome the minister because as they put it’’ this is the first time we have seen the sector minister visiting us;. The minister and her entourage actively participated in singing we want peace and not war song.   

The Care taker of the Nyohini children Home, Madam Augustine Qaonoon lamented about the numerous problems facing the home especially encroachment and poor lighting system.

Madama Qaunoon said the poor lighting system in the home was posing serious security threat to the managers and appealed government to come to the aid of the orphans. The home according to Madam since establishment in 19… has not seeing any renovation and its current state was cause of worry to management.  The home is in dire needs of fence wall to prevent reptiles and residents from open defecation.

The care taker also mentioned the new prepared meters being introduced by the Volta River Authority adding that the home was under resource and cannot afford to pay their arrears and the current bills.  

Responding to the concerns of the Nyohini Children Home, the Gender, Children and Social Protection minster  said she would liaised with the department of social welfare in the northern to assess the home for actions to taken. Nana Oye Lithur said government was very much concern about the safety of the children and that her ministry would put up an assessment team to look into the welfare of the orphans.
